The company had 37 employees as of April 4, 2008, and is based in Seattle, WA. Cozi’s tag line is “Family Life. Simplified.”

Cozi was co-founded by Robbie Cape and Jan Miksovsky after the two of them left Microsoft. Most of the company’s employees worked previously at Amazon.com, Expedia, or Microsoft. The company’s first product was called Cozi Central and released on September 25, 2006, and includes a family calendar, shopping lists, family messaging, and a photo collage screensaver. Cozi was relaunched as a web-oriented company on June 3, 2008.

Corporate Culture

Cozi uses Tupperware-style events called Mom’s parties to conduct market research.

The company is unusual among technology start-ups in that it employs a roughly equal balance of men and women.

From Cozi Website

Cozi is a free web service that helps families manage crazy schedules, track shopping and to do lists, organize household chores, stay in communication and share memories—all in one place.

People have accused us of being fanatically family focused, and you know what? They’re right. From our very beginning in 2005, we’ve been all about families. When we started Cozi, we were just a small group of Microsoft, Expedia, and Amazon veterans—all with kids of our own—looking for a way to balance our busy schedules and create more harmony at home. So we pooled our collective knowledge and experience to create something special. Something that would make it easy and fun for families to juggle everything they have to do. Not just our families, but families everywhere.

We know every family is different, but we all have one thing in common: we’re crazy-busy. Cozi is designed to make it easier to manage everything we have to do. Cozi tracks appointments and activities, simplifies shopping lists and chores, and makes it easy for everyone to communicate with each other. Even when schedules change, Cozi is there making sure all the moving pieces fit together at the end of the day.

The service enables users to store and sync files online and between computers. Dropbox has a cross-platform client (Windows, Mac and Linux) that enables users to drop any file into a Dropbox folder that is then synced to the web and the users’ other computers with the Dropbox client. Files in the Dropbox folder may then be shared with other Dropbox users or accessed from the web. Users may also upload files manually through a web browser. A free Dropbox account offers 2 GB of storage. Users may upgrade to 50 GB by paying a monthly or yearly fee.

While Dropbox functions as a storage service, its focus is on synchronization and sharing. Dropbox synchronization uses SSL transfers with AES-256 encryption, and it supports revision history, so files deleted from the Dropbox folder may be recovered from any of the synced computers. Dropbox’s version control also helps users know the history of a file they may be currently working on, enabling more than one person to edit and re-post files without complications of losing its previous form. There is no limit to file size for files added via the Dropbox application, but files transferred through the web interface are capped at 350 MB. Dropbox uses Amazon’s S3 storage system to store the files.

The Dropbox service is similar to companies such as Box.net, Mozy, and the now defunct Omnidrive and XDrive. The major feature (and limitation) of the Dropbox system is that only files in the Dropbox folder are backed up and synced. The company received seed funding from Y Combinator and Sequoia Capital.

It was first released as a beta version in April 2008. During its preview release, only free accounts are offered. According to Google, a free account can use up to 500 MB of persistent storage and enough CPU and bandwidth for about 5 million page views a month. Google has also indicated its intention to eventually provide additional resources for a price. During the preview stage, Google App Engine tries to accommodate sudden surges in traffic, but errors will occur if the quota continues to be exceeded.

Supported programming languages and frameworks

At its launch date, the only supported programming language was Python. A limited version of the Django web framework is available, as well as a custom Google-written web app framework similar to JSP or ASP.NET. Google has said that it plans to support more languages in the future. Any Python framework not requiring network access, data storage outside the Google Datastore, file system access, or compiled Python modules written in C or Pyrex should work on the Google App Engine.

Differences from traditional application hosting

Unlike more traditional virtual-machine setups such as Amazon’s EC2, Joyent’s Accelerator, FlexiScale, or even a simple shared server or dedicated server system, App Engine is a tightly controlled and tightly integrated product that places many restrictions on users. While others allow for the installation and configuration of nearly any *NIX compatible software, AppEngine requires developers to use Python as the programming language and “Datastore” – a version of Google’s proprietary BigTable – for data persistence.

Scalability benefits gained from removing joins

Google App Engine has a SQL-like syntax called “GQL”. Select statements in GQL can be performed on one table only. GQL intentionally does not support the Join statement.

One-to-many relationships and many-to-many relationships can be accomplished using ReferenceProperty(). This shared-nothing approach allows disks to fail without the system failing.

The where clause of select statements can perform >, >=, <, <= operations on one column only. Therefore, only simple where clauses can be constructed. Switching from a relational database to the Datastore requires a paradigm shift for developers when modeling their data.

App Engine limits the maximum rows returned from an entity get to 1000 rows per Datastore call. Most web database applications use paging and caching, and hence do not require this much data at once, so this is a non-issue in most scenarios.[citation needed] If an application needs more than 1,000 records per operation, it can use its own client-side software or an Ajax page to perform an operation on an unlimited number of rows.

Task scheduling is a heavily requested feature by App Engine users for future releases. Batch updates that take longer than a few seconds cannot be executed. Many have speculated that once the free quota restrictions are lifted, Google will introduce support for such operations. However, mapreduce operations are now supported.

Unlike a relational database such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL, the Datastore API is not relational in the SQL sense.

Restrictions

Developers have read-only access to the filesystem on App Engine.

App Engine can only execute code called from an HTTP request.

No support for task scheduling in the traditional sense.

Users may upload arbitrary Python modules, provided they are pure-Python. C and Pyrex modules are not supported.

Competition

The service competes with Amazon Web Services, a set of application services that enable web sites to host files and execute code on Amazon’s servers. Many tech analysts have been predicting Google’s entry into this field for years. “Google finally realizes it needs to be the web platform,” Techdirt publisher Mike Masnick wrote. “The easier it is to develop and deploy highly scalable web applications, the more innovative and creative solutions we’re going to start to see.”

Other competitors include Microsoft’s Azure Services Platform.

It also includes standard wCMS features features like page caching, advanced templating techniques, and a robust API. There are a number of features and modules in dotCMS, including RSS feeds, AJAX driven calendar, a built in reporting engine, news listing, blogs, forums, user tracking and tagging, built in search engine and language internationalization to name a few.

History

dotCMS was initially developed as a Java alternative to the PHP CMSes on the market, as well as to provide a counterpoint to high cost, enterprise applications. It is the result of over 5 years of development by dotMarketing, Inc, which also developed and released the open source project management tool dotProject. In order to achieve compliance with JSR-168 portlet specification dotCMS was built upon the Liferay portal, though has since forked Liferay at version 3.2.2. dotCMS 1.0 was initially open sourced and made available in 2005 under the dotMarketing Public License. In 2006, dotCMS released version 1.2 which included the structured content engine. In 2007 dotCMS released version 1.5, which included a new user interface and permissions. In October, 2007 dotCMS 1.5 was the runner up for Packt Publishing’s “Best New Open Source CMS” award, followed in 2008 by a second place finish for Packt’s “Best Other Open Source CMS (best non PHP CMS)”. In February 2008, dotCMS users held the first annual “Open Minds” conference in Coconut Grove, Florida. Currently, dotMarketing continues to develop and improve features within dotCMS, such as the social calendar and WebDav integration.

Community

dotCMS has an active and engaged community. There is an annual users conference, a listserv, IRC channel, and Ning and Facebook groups. dotMarketing has also began work on an official community web site, which will be home to a new documentation system a la PHP.net, allowing users to comment and provide examples of code usage, as well as collaborate. The current user base includes deployments by thousands of companies, news organizations, universities, individuals, and more. More information regarding the dotCMS community can be found on the dotCMS website.

Open Minds Conference

The first annual Open Minds Conference was held February 7-10 in Miami, FL. This event was designed to bolster excitement in the community, and provide a venue for users to meet, collaborate, and network. Topics ranged from introductory installation sessions, to more advanced talks on setting up development environments, and was attended by more than 60 participants from 20 institutions. The second annual conference is scheduled for February 4-6, 2009, and will remain in Miami.

IRC Channel

For users familiar with IRC, you can visit the dotCMS channel on Freenode. If you do not have an IRC client, or are unfamiliar with their usage, dotMarketing has provided a web page based client. Either way will allow you to chat with other users and experts on the usage of dotCMS.

Technologies

dotCMS is a standards based CMS written in the JAVA programming language, and comes bundled with the Apache Tomcat Application Server. It is database agnostic and can run on PostgreSQL, MySQL, MSSQL or Oracle. It is capable of integrating with user’s authentication scheme’s, such as Active Directory or LDAP, and will support operation in a clustered or load balanced environment. It leverages a number of standards based open source projects such as:

Apache Struts Web Framework

Apache Lucene Search Engine

Apache Velocity Templating Language

Liferay Portal

EXT Javascript Framework

Apache Tomcat Application Server

OSCache distributed caching system

Hibernate Object Relational Mapping

Structured Content

The driving concept behind content stored within dotCMS is that it is addressed through a system of structures. Structures are administrated through a back end portlet where fields are assigned to them. Fields are named and given a content type and then ordered. Each structure can then be permissioned and used when creating content, and allows different types of content with consistent components to be referenced for display on the front end. A “web page content” structure could be assigned a title and body, for instance, while “events” have titles, dates, times, locations, descriptions, links, etc. Structures therefore allow the CMS to tailor itself to the content demands of the institution using it, because they can create and define structures that are specific to their needs. Those structures can then be created through relationships, allowing content from one structure to be associated content items in another. There is no limit to the number of structures one can use within dotCMS.

How It Works

A project that is said to have been in the works for roughly two years, Viewzi, is a visual search utility – or “platform,” as its engineers prefer to call it – transferred to beta stage in April, 2008. Instead of providing a single list of results in a set form for search requests, as Google does, Viewzi provides different “views” that are tailored to the request being made. The service loads in browsers such as Firefox, Safari, and IE 7 and requires Flash 9.

The Views

3D Photo Cloud View: German design firm WHITEvoid built this intuitive visual 3D image browser for Viewzi with Papervision3D. In this view the user will search for a word and click on 3D Photo Cloud View to see it in action. The user can then add as many words as they like to their search by clicking where they want to place them. Data Sources: Flickr, Google, and Riya.

4 Source View: This view gives you a visual grid of your search results from the four major search engines (Google, Yahoo, Ask, and Microsoft), with the pages “stacked” when they duplicate. It’s an easy way to see search results from multiple search engines, and the extra datapoint–the results that the multiple engines see as important–is useful. Data Sources: Ask, Google, Microsoft Live Search, and Yahoo!

Album View: Data Sources: Amazon, iTunes, and Last. FM.

Amazon Book View: Data Source: Amazon.

Basic Photo View: This view shows images from popular image sharing sites Flickr, SmugMug, and Riya. While the default setting is to use two sites and display the search results in a small size, users have the option of enlarging the search results and also removing images from either Flickr, SmugMug or Riya. : Data Sources: Flickr, Riya, and SmugMug.

Blog Search View: not yet released, in development. Data Sources: Bloglines, IceRocket, MyBlogLog, and Technorati.
