It allows users with accounts at Google to store and share 1 GB of photos for free. Users can purchase more storage space, which can be shared between Google services.

Users may upload pictures either via a web interface, Picasa 2.5.0 or later[4] on Microsoft Windows, using the Exporter for iPhoto, the Aperture to Picasa Web Albums plug-in, or Uploader on Mac OS X, or F-Spot on Linux. In both paid and free accounts, the actual resolution of the photo is maintained (even though a smaller resolution photo may be displayed by the web interface), and the original photo can be downloaded.

PWA uses an “unlisted number” approach for URLs for private photo albums. This allows a user to email a private album’s URL to anyone s/he wants; the recipient can view the album without having to create a user account – this is done via an “authentication key” that’s needed to be appended to the URL for the album to be shown. The Picasa help files say that private albums are not searchable by anyone except the user.

On October 11, 2006, the “Test” name was removed, in favour of purely Picasa Web Albums.

No ads are shown on Picasa Web Albums, in either free or paid accounts. The Terms of Service[6] permit Google to use the uploaded photos to display on the website or via RSS feeds, and also for promoting Google services royalty-free.

Picasa Web Albums was first leaked on June 6, 2006. When introduced, it came with 250 MB free space. On March 7, 2007, it was upgraded to 1 GB.

Well, in terms of automatic tagging, it is extremely competent. When you burn a CD, Windows Media Player will access the Windows Media website, which in turn sources its music info from other music databases, and automatically tags the music.

If the details are wrong, you can perform a manual search too. On an individual level, you can edit the details of individual tracks or several at once, and you can edit the details of whole albums, and re-order files according to their tags.

There is, however, one minor bind if you’re considering burning your CDs onto your hard drive using Windows Media Player: without downloading (and paying for) a plug-in, you can’t create MP3s, only Microsoft’s own audio format, WMA.

Verdict

A feature-packed player with great auto-tagging features, but you do have to pay to burn MP3 files.

It works like any other spyware detector, offering you the choice of either a Quick Scan or a slower Deep Scan. Choose the Deep Scan and you can select specific folders to be scanned, and/or your PC’s memory.

It offers optional real-time protection, which activates various checkpoints throughout a PC’s system in order to prevent spyware being installed.

Also optional is integration with the SpyNet community. This means that any potential spyware threats on your PC are sent to a central database, where the results are analysed and signatures made available to protect you.

It runs a little slowly, and in a quick test against the popular spyware tool Ad-Aware, it was beaten hands down. Things have been improved in this release, but it is still a long way from being a serious challenger to other anti-spyware tools (click here for a short guide on anti-spyware tools).

In order to download this software you need to go through the Windows Genuine Advantage validation procedure on your operating system. A little annoying.

Verdict

Pretty decent anti-spyware tool, but not the best free app on the market.

According to AVG Technologies, over 80 million users have AVG Anti-Virus protection, including users of the Free Edition. On April 24, 2008, AVG released AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0. Along with a more colorful interface, the new program added some new features – a combined Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware protection engine, LinkScanner Search-Shield safe search protection, plus the AVG Security Toolbar – which were previously only available in AVG commercial versions.

There are some limitations with AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0 compared to the commercial versions of AVG products. These limitations include:

• Less protection – AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0 provides only base level protection against viruses, spyware and safe searching. It does not provide safe surfing (drive-by download protection) nor protection from crackers, keyloggers, spam, phishing attacks and malicious file downloads that can come through instant messaging and attachments from seemingly friendly sources. This protection is only available in the commercial versions of AVG products.
• Slower updates – AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0 receives updates via a lower priority service. Priority updating via high-speed servers is only available for the commercial versions of AVG products.
• No telephone or e-mail technical support – There is no telephone or e-mail technical support provided by AVG for users of AVG Free Edition products anywhere in the world. AVG Free Edition users have access to support via the self-help AVG Free Forum.
• No customization – Scheduling options in AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0 are very limited (only one scheduled update per day, one scheduled scan per day etc.). Terminator

Terminator was originally written by Phil Norman, who produced a more-or-less usable replacement for rxvt on his own between 2004-04-21 and 2004-05-28; roughly a month of development time. Elliott Hughes took Phil’s terminal emulation and used it as a base upon which he could experiment with advanced terminal emulator features and con

tinues to actively develop Terminator. Martin Dorey ported Terminator to Cygwin, making Terminator one of the few terminal emulators available on Windows and Unix platforms.

• Automatic Logging – Complete logs are automatically generated of all of the user’s terminal sessions.
• Drag & Drop – Text and URLs, and even files from Finder/Nautilus/Windows Explorer can be dropped on Terminator to be inserted as text, with automatic quoting of filenames containing shell meta-characters.

• Tab Character Handling – Many terminal emulators translate tab characters into strings of spaces. If a section of text is then copied or pasted from the terminal into a text editor, it appears as spaces rather than tabs; Terminator remembers them as tab characters.
• Unlimited Scrollback – Terminator does not throw away output when it scrolls off the top of the screen, nor when it reaches any arbitrary limit. The user must manually clear the scrollback.
• Intelligent Vertical Scrolling – Terminator’s scrollbar won’t keep jumping when there’s output if you’ve deliberately scrolled back to look at part of the history, but as soon as you scroll back to the bottom again, it will resume auto-scrolling.
• Safe Quit – Terminator knows when you still have processes running, and brings up a dialog rather than just letting those processes die.
• UTF-8 – Terminator does not mangle accented characters, and it copes well with languages such as Greek where there’s a mix of normal and wide glyphs.
