It was released by Google on October 7, 2005 through Google Labs. Reader graduated from beta status on September 17, 2007.</p>
<p><span id="more-1649"></span></p>
<h3>Features</h3>
<p>Interface</p>
<p><a href="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/google-reader-web.jpg"><img style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" src="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/google-reader-web-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="google_reader_web" width="320" height="189" align="left" /></a> Major revisions to Reader&#8217;s interface were made on September 28, 2006. In an interview with Robert Scoble, product manager Nick Baum stated that the redesign is a movement toward making news aggregation something for the general public to enjoy.</p>
<p>Here are some of the features that are now included within Google Reader:</p>
<ul>
<li>A front page that lets you see new items at a glance</li>
<li>Import and export subscription lists as an OPML file</li>
<li>Keyboard shortcuts for main functions</li>
<li>Choice between list view or expanded view for item viewing (showing either just the story title or with a description, respectively)</li>
<li>Automatic marking of items as read as they are scrolled past (expanded view only)</li>
<li>Search in all feeds, across all updates from subscriptions</li>
<li>An easter egg that allows a special &#8220;Ninja!&#8221; skin to be accessed if the user inputs the Konami Code.</li>
</ul>
<p>Organization</p>
<p>Users can subscribe to feeds using either Google Reader&#8217;s search function, or by entering in the exact URL of the RSS or Atom feed. New posts from those feeds are then shown on the left-hand side of the screen. One can then order that list by date or relevance. Items can also be organized with labels, as well as being able to create &#8220;Starred Items&#8221; for easy access.</p>
<p>Sharing</p>
<p>Items in Google Reader can be shared with other Web users. Previously this was done by sending a link through e-mail, directing the user to the shared article; or by creating a basic webpage that includes all shared items from a user&#8217;s account. In December 2007, Google changed the sharing policy so that items the user marked as shared were automatically visible to their Google Talk contacts. Users criticized this change because there is no way to opt out. The URL for a user&#8217;s page of shared items contains a random string, and Google originally advertised this as a way to limit sharing to only those people to whom you give the address.</p>
<p>Offline access</p>
<p>Google Reader was the first application to make use of Google Gears, a browser extension that lets online applications work offline. Users who have installed the extension can download up to 2000 items to be read offline. After coming back online, Google Reader updates the feeds.</p>
<h4>Mobile access</h4>
<p>A mobile interface was released on May 18, 2006. It now can be used by devices that support XHTML or WAP 2.0. On May 12, 2008, Google announced a version of Google Reader targeted at iPhone users. It can be found here.[7]</p>
<p>iGoogle</p>
<p>On May 4, 2006, Google released a new feature[8] which enables feeds from Reader to be displayed on iGoogle (formerly Google Personalized Homepage).</p>
<p><a href="http://www.sharealink.org/internet/browsers/firefox-web-browser/" class="kblinker" title="More about Firefox &raquo;">Firefox</a> integration</p>
<p>Google Reader is included within Mozilla Firefox&#8217;s feed recognition (in version 2.0 and higher), which can automatically redirect users to Google Reader&#8217;s Add Subscription screen.</p>
<p>Wii version</p>
<p>On May 8, 2007, Google created a version of Google Reader specifically formatted for the Wii web browser.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/avant-browser.jpg"><img src="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/avant-browser-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="avant_browser" width="150" height="150" align="right" /></a> Avant Browser is a popular freeware web browser from a Chinese programmer named Anderson Che, which unites the Trident layout engine built into Windows (see Internet Explorer shell) with an interface intended to be more feature-rich, flexible and ergonomic than Microsoft&#8217;s Internet Explorer (IE). It runs on Windows 98 and above, including Windows Vista. Internet Explorer version 6 or 7 must be installed.</p>
<p>As of November 2008, total downloads surpassed 22.5 million.</p>
<p>Avant Browser is currently available in 41 languages.</p>
<p><span id="more-1533"></span></p>
<p>Avant Browser was largely inspired by <a href="http://www.sharealink.org/internet/browsers/opera-web-browser-faster-safer/" class="kblinker" title="More about Opera &raquo;">Opera</a>, the first major browser to have a multiple document interface. The developer&#8217;s objective was to wrap a comparable interface around the layout engine used by Internet Explorer, thereby achieving Opera-like ergonomics without suffering the frequent problems that browser had rendering pages tested only in IE. In fact it was initially released under the name &#8220;IEopera&#8221;, though this was soon changed due to the obvious trademark issues.</p>
<p>Latterly, Avant&#8217;s developer Anderson Che has concentrated on adding user-requested features, and Avant was among the first browsers to have popup blocking, advertising server blocking, and one-click disabling of potential security vulnerabilities such as ActiveX, Java, and scripts.</p>
<p>In the Avant Browser, unlike most other &#8220;alternative&#8221; browsers, the default search engine is not Google. Instead it uses a version of the Yahoo! search engine, given a custom look and renamed Avantfind, and it is not immediately evident how to change it. However Google and many other search engines are available via the address bar &#8220;Quick Search&#8221; facility, and instructions on how to change the default to an engine of the user&#8217;s choice have been posted by the very active Avant Browser user community.</p>
<p>The community has also created other tools and extensions for Avant, including registry files which allow it to use the Information Bar and other security enhancements of XP SP2.</p>
<p>Alongside Avant, the developer has a sister project known as Orca Browser, an Avant-like shell of Mozilla&#8217;s Gecko layout engine as used in <a href="http://www.sharealink.org/internet/browsers/firefox-web-browser/" class="kblinker" title="More about Firefox &raquo;">Firefox</a> 3 and has similar approaches as <a href="http://www.sharealink.org/internet/browsers/flock-browser-the-social-web-browser/" class="kblinker" title="More about Flock &raquo;">Flock</a>. It is in the final testing stage and a public release candidate version is available.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/furl-logo.jpg"><img src="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/furl-logo-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="furl_logo" width="150" height="150" align="right" /></a> Furl (from File Uniform Resource Locators) is a free social bookmarking website that allows members to store searchable copies of webpages and share them with others. Every member receives 5 gigabytes of storage space. The site was founded by Mike Giles in 2003 and purchased by LookSmart in 2004.</p>
<p>Features</p>
<p>Furl enables members to bookmark, annotate, and share web pages. Topics are used to categorize saved sites, similar to the tagging feature of other social websites. Additionally, a user may write comments, save clippings, assign each bookmark a rating and keywords (which are given greater weight while searching), and have an option of private or public storage for each topic or item archived.</p>
<p><span id="more-1498"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/furl.jpg"><img style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" src="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/furl-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="furl" width="289" height="379" align="right" /></a> Considered one of its main features, Furl also privately archives a complete copy of the html of each page that a user bookmarks, making it accessible even if the original content is modified or removed, an antidote for link rot. This also allows full text searches to be made within the archive. However, as highlighted under limitations below, images that are embedded using links are not archived with user&#8217;s copy of the html page, so images may disappear over time. To avoid claims of copyright violations, this archived copy is visible only to the member who bookmarked the page. Other users are directed to the publisher&#8217;s site, where the content can be viewed depending on membership requirements and privacy settings.</p>
<p>Users may see lists of other users who have furled a URL, and read their comments (if made public) to find users who share interests, supporting folksonomy. A dynamic recommendation list is automatically generated for each user based on the sites already saved by him or her and other users with similar interests. Lists of the most popular items for today, this week, and this month (and by topic) are also available. It&#8217;s possible to subscribe to a user&#8217;s archive (or to a set of topics in a user&#8217;s archive) to get daily email notifications whenever new items are filed.</p>
<p>Furl allows bookmarks to be imported from (and exported to) Internet Explorer, Mozilla/<a href="http://www.sharealink.org/internet/browsers/firefox-web-browser/" class="kblinker" title="More about Firefox &raquo;">Firefox</a>, and del.icio.us; and also supports exporting of the entire saved archives to ZIP formats, and export metadata to XML format. There are other import/export functions, including various citation formats (MLA, APA, Chicago, CBE, BibTeX, and RIS/EndNote). Toolbars and bookmarklets are available for Internet Explorer and Firefox to quicken the bookmarking process.</p>
<p>Limitations</p>
<p>Images which are embedded links will not be archived with the HTML page. For example, when an HTML page is archived via Furl, the location of the JPG from the HTML content is saved, thus pulling up that image when the user&#8217;s personal copy is loaded; however, if that image no longer exists on the original server, it is lost and will not display with the user&#8217;s archived copy. So, a Furled site with many pictures may end up being just text.</p>
<p>The search result displays items from the entire Furl archive, or only from a user&#8217;s own archive, but the sequence of these results is automatically ordered. There is no option to display results by date order, by popularity order, or in any other particular sequence. It is not obvious how the results are ordered.</p>
<p>The popularity of Furl has grown, which has exposed users to performance problems which began in the latter half of 2006 and persisted into 2007.</p>

It is a personalized recommendation engine which uses peer and social-networking principles.</p>
<p>Web pages are presented when the user clicks the &#8220;Stumble!&#8221; button on the browser&#8217;s toolbar. StumbleUpon chooses which Web page to display based on the user&#8217;s ratings of previous pages, ratings by his/her friends, and by the ratings of users with similar interests. Users can rate or choose not to rate any Web page with a thumbs up or thumbs down, and clicking the Stumble button resembles &#8220;channel-surfing&#8221; the Web. StumbleUpon also allows their users to indicate their interests from a list of nearly 500 topics to produce relevant content for the user. There is also one-click blogging built in as well.</p>
<p><span id="more-1344"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/stumbleupon.jpg"><img style="border-top-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" src="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/stumbleupon-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="stumbleupon" width="320" height="420" align="right" /></a> Toolbar versions exist for Firefox, Mozilla Application Suite and Internet Explorer, but also works with some independent Mozilla-based browsers. A third party toolbar has also been created for <a href="http://www.sharealink.org/internet/browsers/opera-web-browser-faster-safer/" class="kblinker" title="More about Opera &raquo;">Opera</a>.</p>
<p>eBay acquired StumbleUpon in May 2007 for $75,000,000.</p>
<h3>History</h3>
<p>StumbleUpon was founded by Garrett Camp, Geoff Smith, Justin LaFrance, and Eric Boyd during Garrett&#8217;s time in post-graduate school (in Calgary, Alberta, Canada). The idea of creating a company was established before the content: of the five or six ideas for products, StumbleUpon was chosen. Garrett describes in a BBC interview the moment for him in which he felt the company had really taken off: &#8220;When we passed the half a million mark (in registered users), it seemed more real.&#8221;</p>
<p>The popularity of the software attracted Silicon Valley investor Brad O&#8217;Neill to take notice of the company and assist with a move to San Francisco, as well as bringing in subsequent fund-raising totaling $1.2 million from other angel investors including Ram Shriram (Google), Mitch Kapor (Mozilla Foundation), Josh Kopelman (First Round Capital), and Ron Conway. Garrett Camp and Geoff Smith now reside in San Francisco, where StumbleUpon is headquartered.</p>
<p>Service details</p>
<p>StumbleUpon uses collaborative filtering (an automated process combining human opinions with machine learning of personal preference) to create virtual communities of like-minded Web surfers. Rating Web sites updates a personal profile (a blog-style record of rated sites) and generates peer networks of Web surfers linked by common interest. These social networks coordinate the distribution of Web content, so that users &#8220;stumble upon&#8221; pages explicitly recommended by friends and peers.</p>
<p>Users rate a site by giving it a thumbs up, thumbs down selection on the StumbleUpon toolbar, and can optionally leave additional commentary on the site&#8217;s review page, which also appears on the user&#8217;s blog. This social content discovery approach automates the &#8220;word-of-mouth&#8221; referral of peer-approved Web sites and simplifies Web navigation.</p>
<p>Stumblers also have the ability to rate and review each others&#8217; blogs and join interest groups, which are community forums for specific topics. Users can post comments in the manner of a discussion board in these groups and post links to Web sites that apply to the specific topic.</p>
<p>[edit] StumbleVideo</p>
<p>On December 13, 2006 StumbleUpon launched their StumbleVideo site at <a href="http://video.stumbleupon.com/" target="_blank">http://video.stumbleupon.com/</a>. The new site allows users without a toolbar to &#8220;stumble&#8221; through all the videos that toolbar users have submitted and rate them using an AJAX interface. The site currently aggregates videos from <a href="http://www.sharealink.org/internet/video-sharing-websites/youtube-broadcast-yourself/" class="kblinker" title="More about YouTube &raquo;">YouTube</a>, Google Video, Metacafe, and MySpace Videos.</p>
<p>StumbleUpon launched a version of StumbleVideo for the Internet Channel Web browser that runs on the Wii console on February 12, 2007. This version of StumbleVideo is optimized for the Wii&#8217;s smaller screen resolution and offers similar functionality to that of the original version.</p>
<p>StumbleThru</p>
<p>In April 2007 StumbleUpon launched the StumbleThru service, allowing users of the toolbar to stumble within sites such as The Onion, Public Broadcasting Service and Wikipedia. According to the announcement of the feature, StumbleUpon plans on adding additional Web sites in the future.</p>
<p>Advertising</p>
<p>StumbleUpon uses knowledge of user preferences to deliver targeted advertising. A small proportion of the &#8220;stumbles&#8221; users come across (typically less than 2%) are sponsored pages matching their topics of interest. For example, those signed up for photography will occasionally see an ad related to photography. Such content is vetted by humans for &#8220;quality and relevance&#8221; prior to its delivery A sponsored site is identifiable by a green &#8220;person&#8221; logo on the toolbar. Paid accounts (referred to as &#8220;Sponsors&#8221;) have a variety of options, including the ability to turn off such advertising.</p>
<p>Success</p>
<p>In July 2006 StumbleUpon had 1 million users. According to the homepage, StumbleUpon has more than 6.3 million members as of November 5, 2008. Before the end of May 2008, StumbleUpon says that it will have collected its five-billionth &#8220;stumble&#8221;, more than one billion of which have taken place in 2008 alone.</p>
<p>eBay</p>
<p>In May 2007 StumbleUpon was purchased by eBay. Early reports indicated they were also in talks with Google before the eBay announcement. A year and a half later (September 2008) eBay has hired Deutsche Bank to try to sell StumbleUpon again. Although the number of registered user has been growing steadily, the number of visitors has declined from 4.4 million to 1.3 million between July 2007 and July 2008.</p>

Google has published its plan to build into Chrome what is arguably its most requested feature: the ability to accept extensions that can customize how the open-source Web browser operates.
And guess what? Google&#8217;s dependence on advertising notwithstanding, one of the extension examples the company points to is the ability to block advertisements.

<p>Google has published its plan to build into <a href="http://www.sharealink.org/internet/browsers/google-chrome/" class="kblinker" title="More about chrome &raquo;">Chrome</a> what is arguably its most requested feature: the ability to accept extensions that can customize how the open-source Web browser operates.</p>
<p>And guess what? Google&#8217;s dependence on advertising notwithstanding, one of the extension examples the company points to is the ability to block advertisements.<span id="more-361"></span></p>
<p>The Chrome extensions document, spotlighted Saturday by Google programmer Aaron Boodman, doesn&#8217;t include a timeline, but it does shed light on why the project is a priority for Chromium, the open-source project behind Chrome.</p>
<p>&#8220;Chromium can&#8217;t be everything to all people,&#8221; according to the document. &#8220;User-created extensions have been proposed to solve these problems: the addition of features that have specific or limited appeal; users coming from other browsers who are used to certain extensions that they can&#8217;t live without; bundling partners who would like to add features to Chromium specific to their bundle.&#8221;</p>
<p>When Google launched Chrome three months ago, it promised a Chrome extensions framework. Extensions are a popular feature of Chrome&#8217;s most likely rival, Mozilla&#8217;s <a href="http://www.sharealink.org/internet/browsers/firefox-web-browser/" class="kblinker" title="More about Firefox &raquo;">Firefox</a>, and one very popular extension is AdBlock Plus.</p>
<p>And AdBlock makes a specific appearance on the list of extension uses that Google said it would like to support eventually:</p>
<blockquote><p>• Bookmarking/navigation tools: Delicious Toolbar, StumbleUpon, Web-based history, new tab page clipboard accelerators.</p>
<p>• Content enhancements: <a href="http://www.sharealink.org/messaging/instant-messaging/skype/" class="kblinker" title="More about Skype &raquo;">Skype</a> extension (clickable phone numbers), RealPlayer extension (save video), Autolink (generic microformat data&#8211;addresses, phone numbers, etc.)</p>
<p>• Content filtering: AdBlock, Flashblock, privacy control, parental control</p>
<p>• Download helpers: video helpers, download accelerators, DownThemAll, FlashGot</p>
<p>• Features: ForecastFox, FoxyTunes, Web Of Trust, GooglePreview, BugMeNot</p></blockquote>
<p>Demand for extensions is real.</p>
<p>In an unscientific CNET News poll about why people don&#8217;t use Chrome, about 19 percent pointed to the lack of an extensions feature. And on Google&#8217;s issue tracking site for Chromium, a Chrome extensions feature is the top-requested item.</p>
<p>&#8220;Of all the Firefox plug-ins, this is the one essential one,&#8221; said Firefox user Ole Eichhorn. &#8220;Chrome is faster until you factor in all the cruft that gets downloaded as ads, then it isn&#8217;t faster anymore. When Chrome supports AdBlock, it will be the winner, but until it does, Firefox is the only choice.&#8221;</p>
<p>In its document, Google described some of its goals for Chrome extensions. The extensions should silently update, just like Chrome does. They should be isolated for security reasons and only get access to resources it&#8217;s entitled to use. Installation should be easy, taking only two clicks.</p>
<p>They should permit rich user interface options&#8211;rich enough to implement some parts of Chrome as extensions, Google said. Among the interface options should be &#8220;toolbars, sidebars, content scripts (for Greasemonkey-like functionality), and content filtering (for parental filters, malware filters, or AdBlock-like functionality),&#8221; Google said. Some interfaces will require the user to grant specific permissions, such as &#8220;access to the history database&#8221; or &#8220;access to mail.google.com,&#8221; Google said.</p>
<p>Google will play a major role in extensions, providing a central service that can be used to issue updates and to blacklist &#8220;malicious or harmful extensions&#8221; so the browser won&#8217;t use them.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s likely in the future we may want to provide a consumer front-end which would allow users to more easily find the most popular, highest quality and trustworthy extensions,&#8221; Google also said.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/3200e_471597824" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></p>

<description><![CDATA[Mozilla Firefox is a free and open source web browser descended from the Mozilla Application Suite.]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/firefox.jpg"><img src="http://www.sharealink.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/firefox-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="<a href="http://www.sharealink.org/internet/browsers/firefox-web-browser/" class="kblinker" title="More about Firefox &raquo;">firefox</a>&#8221; width=&#8221;229&#8243; height=&#8221;221&#8243; align=&#8221;right&#8221; /></a> Mozilla Firefox is a free and open source web browser descended from the Mozilla Application Suite, managed by the Mozilla Corporation. Firefox had 19.97% of the recorded usage share of web browsers as of October 2008, making it the second-most popular browser in current use worldwide, after Internet Explorer.</p>
<p><span id="more-10"></span></p>
<p>To display web pages, Firefox uses the Gecko layout engine, which implements some current web standards plus a few features which are intended to anticipate likely additions to the standards.</p>
<p>Firefox includes tabbed browsing, a spell checker, incremental find, live bookmarking, a download manager, and an integrated search system that uses the user&#8217;s desired search engine. Functions can be added through add-ons created by third-party developers, the most popular of which include the NoScript JavaScript disabling utility, Tab Mix Plus customizer, FoxyTunes media player control toolbar, Adblock Plus ad blocking utility, StumbleUpon (website discovery), DownThemAll! download enhancer and Web Developer toolbar.</p>
<p>Firefox runs on various versions of Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and many other Unix-like operating systems. Its current stable release is version 3.0.3, released on September 26, 2008. Firefox&#8217;s source code is free software, released under a tri-license GPL/LGPL/MPL</p>
<h3>Mozilla Firefox 2</h3>
<p>Mozilla Firefox 2 is a version of Mozilla Firefox, a web browser released on October 24th 2006 by the Mozilla Corporation.</p>
<p>Firefox 2 uses version 1.8 of the Gecko layout engine for displaying web pages. The release contained many new features not found in Firefox 1.5, including improved support for SVG and JavaScript 1.7, as well as UI changes.</p>
<p>On March 22, 2006, the first alpha version of Firefox 2 (Bon Echo Alpha 1) was released. It featured Gecko 1.8.1 for the first time. Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.x is the final version supported on Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98. Mac OS X 10.5 support was added October 18, 2007 with version 2.0.0.8 .</p>
<p>Firefox 2.0 featured updates to tabbed browsing environment, the extensions manager, the GUI, and the find, search and software update engines; a new session restore feature; inline spell checking; and an anti-phishing feature which was implemented by Google as an extension, and later merged into the program itself.</p>
<p>Mozilla is planning on ending support for Firefox 2 mid-December 2008.</p>

<h3>Mozilla Firefox 3</h3>
<p>Mozilla Firefox 3 was released on June 17, 2008 by the Mozilla Corporation. Firefox 3 uses version 1.9 of the Mozilla Gecko layout engine for displaying web pages. The new version fixes many bugs, improves standard compliance, and implements new web APIs. Other new features include a redesigned download manager, a new &#8220;Places&#8221; system for storing bookmarks and history, and separate themes for different operating systems.</p>
<p>Development stretches back to the first Firefox 3 beta (under the codename &#8216;Gran Paradiso&#8217;) which had been released several months earlier on 19 November 2007, and was followed by several more beta releases in spring 2008 culminating in the June release.</p>
<p>Firefox 3 had 2.31% of the recorded usage share of web browsers by June 2008, and had over 8 million unique downloads the day it was released, setting a Guinness World Record.</p>
