Applications

Application Framework

Developers have full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications. Android Runtime

Android includes a set of core libraries that provides most of the functionality available in the core libraries of the Java programming language.

Every Android application runs in its own process, with its own instance of the Dalvik virtual machine. Dalvik has been written so that a device can run multiple VMs efficiently. The Dalvik VM executes files in the Dalvik Executable (.dex) format which is optimized for minimal memory footprint. The VM is register-based, and runs classes compiled by a Java language compiler that have been transformed into the .dex format by the included “dx” tool.

The Dalvik VM relies on the Linux kernel for underlying functionality such as threading and low-level memory management.

Linux Kernel

Android relies on Linux version 2.6 for core system services such as security, memory management, process management, network stack, and driver model. The kernel also acts as an abstraction layer between the hardware and the rest of the software stack.

It works like any other spyware detector, offering you the choice of either a Quick Scan or a slower Deep Scan. Choose the Deep Scan and you can select specific folders to be scanned, and/or your PC’s memory.

It offers optional real-time protection, which activates various checkpoints throughout a PC’s system in order to prevent spyware being installed.

Also optional is integration with the SpyNet community. This means that any potential spyware threats on your PC are sent to a central database, where the results are analysed and signatures made available to protect you.

It runs a little slowly, and in a quick test against the popular spyware tool Ad-Aware, it was beaten hands down. Things have been improved in this release, but it is still a long way from being a serious challenger to other anti-spyware tools (click here for a short guide on anti-spyware tools).

In order to download this software you need to go through the Windows Genuine Advantage validation procedure on your operating system. A little annoying.

The Cloud OS features a browser with an integrated, OS X-like dock and a Linux kernel that boots “in seconds,” according to the company. The browser looks oddly similar to Google’s Chrome, though no official connection between Google and gOS exists. Within the browser window resides a dock that provides quick access to a number of apps–Skype, YouTube, Google’s Docs, etc.–that you can fire up without running Windows. From the dock, you can also boot to Windows.

Unlike the gOS, the Cloud OS isn’t meant to replace Windows but live alongside it, similar to what Asus offers on some of its laptops and Lenovo on its IdeaPad S10 Netbook with the SplashTop app. Good OS states that Cloud “does not require additional hardware and is compatible with any operating system.”

Good OS demonstrated its Cloud OS on a gigabyte touch-screen Netbook at the World Summit in Paris. The company says that such touch-screen Netbooks running the Cloud OS and Windows will be released at CES next month.

Adobe has announced the launch of an online photo storage and manipulation tool. The public beta of Photoshop Express marks the arrival on the internet of the probably the world’s most recognizable image processing brand name. Photoshop Express allows users to non-destructively edit and enhance their images, which can be pulled and pushed to and from popular websites such as Facebook. Updated: Adobe has issued a statement about some of the application’s fine print that was causing consternation.
